The Eagle Festival kicks off Saturday, November 21 in Harrison Mills - stay overnight at Sandpiper Golf Resort and spend the day seeking eagles from aboard a Fraser River Safari.

The more I explore this incredible province of British Columbia, the greater the discoveries. Who knew the delightful community of Harrison Mills in the Fraser Valley – an incredibly relaxing drive along Lougheed Highway (#7) only two hours outside of the lower mainland of Vancouver – is the most densely populated area of raptors – eagles, anywhere in the world? It is and according to David Hancock of Hancock Wilderness Foundation, “It’s truly amazing once the weather gets colder up North. The eagles arrive daily, travelling south from Alaska to places like this, soaring 300 to 400 miles per day. They are very temporal, seeking out the salmon. They’re here, then they are gone. Returning when the water levels drop on the rivers, exposing the eagles’ treasured feed of expired salmon.” The best time to view this tremendous act of nature is from early December to mid-January, every year. For a special video viewing of the eagles visit www.hancockwildlife.org.

David Hancock and Karen Bills of Hancock Wildlife Foundation View Eagles

And while you’re visiting the area, check out the scenery aboard a riverboat tour with Fraser River Safari. For schedules and tour details visit www.fraserriversafari.com.

The Greater Vancouver Zoo is working with the team at Xa:ytem Interpretive Centre during the festival as well. Drop by to see the live exhibit of the Great Horned Owl, Barn Owl and maybe, if you’re lucky, Meredith the Bald Eagle may be visiting. Xa:ytem features local native art and gifts in their First Nations gift gallery too. There are great gift ideas for Christmas. For directions and hours of operation visit www.xaytem.ca.

Extend your eagle viewing adventure with an overnight stay at Sandpiper Golf Resort and Rowena’s Inn. This exquisite heritage Manor is the former summer home of the Pretty Family. Filled with favourite family antiques and heirlooms, including a photo wall revealing the faces of the family behind the home, the ambiance is cultured and luxurious. Enjoy a lavish hot and cold breakfast in the solarium located off the main dining lounge, or stay in one of the four west coast chic cabins – each complete with king-sized bed, soaker jacuzzi tub and river rock fireplace – a perfect retreat to relax with a glass of wine while admiring the view out over the river. Whether you choose to stay at the Inn or in a cabin, the eagles will soar past gracing you with their majesty. Visit www.sandpiperresort.ca for package details.

The Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society – OWL – is a dynamic organization comprised of people who care deeply about the safety of birds of prey. The web site offers information on educational programs and special events, as well as contact information should you site a bird in need. Please visit www.owlcanada.ca.

The Langley Spirit of BC Community Committee is one of over 95 similar committees around British Columbia that have been created to help spread the excitement of the 2010 Winter Games to all regions of the province. The work of thousands of volunteers in more than 200 communities will ensure that the Vancouver-Whistler games are truly for everyone.

Throughout 2008 our province celebrates its 150th Birthday and the Langley Spirit of BC is working with organizers to add a touch of birthday fun to traditional events in the community. November will be the grand finale to festivities with Douglas Day celebrations in Fort Langley. Several special events will be held at the Fort, including a re-enactment of the reading of the Proclamation that created the crown colony of British Columbia, a non-motorized parade and other events that will be announced closer to the day!

Each year Spirit of BC Week is celebrated in February to draw attention to the dates of the 2010 Winter Games. This year’s activities included flag raising ceremonies at both our municipal halls, special Spirit of BC Storytelling activities at our local libraries, free family skating and other fun events. Plans for 2009 Spirit of BC Week festivities will be even more exciting so stay tuned!

In May, the Langley Spirit of BC moved into a larger office at 101-20611 Fraser Highway. From this office, staff will be working on projects focusing on Volunteerism, Accessibility in addition to monitoring opportunities for local businesses to work with VANOC in the final stages of preparing for 2010.

Langley Spirit of BC will be out an about in the community for May Day, Langley City’s Parade and Community Day Celebration, Aldergrove Fair Days and many more events. Watch for our colourful banners and flags at events in your neighbourhood.

The Spirit of BC is alive and growing in Langley – be sure you FEEL IT – LIVE IT – SHARE IT – it’s contagious!

Visitors and Langley residents alike will get a fascinating glimpse of rural life in Langley when farms participating in the 2008 Circle Farm Tour open their gates for this self-guided tour. Farm Tour guides are available in print throughout the community and online at www.circlefarmtour.com.

The Circle Farm Tour concept was started five years ago as a way to introduce to the public the variety of successful agri-businesses located in the community.

This year, you will be able to meet horticulturalists who develop exotic daylilies, find out where cashmere sweaters come from, and pair home-made berry jam with award-winning local wines.

The crown jewel in Langley’s equestrian industry is Thunderbird Showpark, an 85-acre equestrian facility close to Hwy. No. 1. In addition to major equestrian events which attract international competitors, Thunderbird hosts lots of fun events for families. Admission and parking is free. For more information on events at Thunderbird, go to

www.thunderbirdshowpark.com

Two of Langley’s premier wineries are on the farm tour this year. The Fort Wine Co., minutes from historic Fort Langley, offers tastings of its table and dessert fruit wines in the ’saloon’ and sells specialty food items and gifts onsite, including a line of cranberry jams and wines. Or try a tour of the winemaking facilities.

www.thefortwineco.com.

Domaine de Chaberton Winery, in scenic south Langley, is the largest and oldest winery in the Fraser Valley. Its wines have won numerous awards in wine competitions held throughout Canada, the United States and Europe. Enjoy lunch or dinner at the Zagat-rated Bacchus Bistro, which features authentic French cuisine, prepared with farm-fresh local ingredients.

www.domainedechaberton.com

The best of the berries are on the tour this year at Driediger Farms www.driedigerfarms.com and Krause Berry Farms www.krauseberryfarms.com, where luscious fresh strawberries have been luring visitors for over 30 years. At Krause farm, you can pick or buy raspberries, blueberries, currants and gooseberries. Both farms serve up fresh-baked pies and jams to take home.

More farm fresh food is available at Vista D’Oro, a culinary agro-tourism operation near Campbell Valley Park. In addition to culinary herbs, heirloom tomatoes and orchard fruits, you can buy artisanal jams, preserves and cakes. At work in the farm’s cooking studio are catering chefs who design custom menus featuring local food.

www.vistadoro.com.

JD Farms raises and sells special turkeys and turkey products free of antibiotics and animal by-products. Their birds are raised in spacious, well-ventilated barns with free access to fresh water and feed.

www.jdfarms.net.

Plant lovers will have a field day on the tour this year. Erickson’s Daylily Gardens have Canada’s largest selection of award-winning daylilies and will have hundreds of unusual varieties on display. www.plantlovers.com/erikson. Cedar Rim Nurseries is the largest retail nursery in the Lower Mainland, set on 80 acres, and stocks over 60 varieties of Japanese maples, and 60 varieties of rhododendrons. www.cedarrim.com. The scent of lavender fills the air at Full Bloom Farm, where visitors can relax in scented gardens, book an aromatic massage and sample products from the farmgate shop. www.fullbloomfarm.ca.

Kids will love to meet the creatures at Aldor Acres and Sterling Farms. Aldor acres offers hands-on farm experiences like haywagon rides, apple harvest and dairy education tours and hosts birthday parties and special events. At Sterling Farms, which specializes in raising animals with fine fleeces, you will meet llamas, suri and huacaya alpacas and cashmere-

producing goats. Children’s fibre arts programs and adventures are

available this summer. www.sterlingfarms.com.
