" />
Situated on beautiful Slocan Lake directly across from Valhalla Provincial Park, New Denver is a vacationer’s paradise. Home to about 600 residents, this is the perfect location for a lunchtime stop at one of the local eateries or a week long stay to enjoy the outdoor opportunities. Explore the clear water of Slocan Lake, hike the peaks in Valhalla Park or cruise the abundance of local trails on your bike or ATV. As well as being a great site for outdoor opportunities, New Denver is known for its history.

On the rock faces of the lake, see petroglyphs from early first nations people and in the local museum explore the ways of early mining and logging. But perhaps the most interesting glimpse of history is the town’s ties to the Second World War.

During the 1940s over 22, 000 Japanese Canadians from B.C.’s coastal region were labelled “enemy aliens” and forced to internment camps in regions like New Denver. Today, the town has established two commemorative sites to recognize this period in Canadian history. ;

Nakusp and the surrounding areas lay claim to being the natural hot springs capital of B.C. In addition to the world-famous Halcyon Hot Springs and the Nakusp Hot Springs, there are many natural hot springs available to those willing to put in the extra effort. Soak in natural mineral pools built up over the years by generations of hot springs enthusiasts. A trip to many of the hot springs means a drive down logging roads and a hike into the forest. You should be fully prepared to deal with any eventuality, including unmarked pathways, bears, steep climbs and fast changing mountain weather. Some are relatively easy to access, while others require a major hike. Some are located on private property and not open to the public. Visit the Nakusp Visitor InfoCentre for maps and advice.;

You haven’t really seen Nakusp if you don’t take time to stroll down the waterfront promenade and take in the views across the Upper Arrow Lake towards Saddleback Mountain. Anchored by the Nakusp Marina and Nakusp Beach, this paved level stroll takes you past the Spicer Garden, the Japanese Garden and the historic Leland Hotel, the oldest continually-operating hotel in B.C. The walk is stroller and wheelchair friendly, and a good place to walk the dog. It is in the heart of Nakusp, and the many benches are the place to bring your take-out snack, stretch out on the public lawns, or take a dip in the lake. Don’t miss the stunning summer evenings and sunsets.

If nature’s beauty inspires the artist within, there are several places folks can admire local art work, music and creativity.

Music in the Park

Every Wednesday evening throughout July and August local musicians bring the Recreation Park in Nakusp to life.

Hills Garlic Festival

Organic garlic products in a woodsy marketplace. Food, music and a garlic breath contest. Happens in September.

Nakusp Music Festival is held July 13-15, with bands such as Collective Soul, Tom Cochrane, Nazareth and Glass Tiger. The weekend promises to be an enjoyable one for festival goers of all ages. The beach is close to the festival grounds, so if you need a break and want to cool off with a lake swim, it will be easy!

The 7th annual Whatshan Lake Music Festival is also set for the weekend of July 20-22. The Kimberlites, Earl Staten and others will perform at the Whatshan Lake Retreat. Check out tickets and information at www.whatshanmusic.com;

The Nikkei Internment Memorial Centre is the only site in Canada that chronicles and commemorates the more than 22,000 Japanese-Canadians that were labelled “enemy aliens” and forced from their coastal homes to internment camps in the B.C. Interior.

 The Centre consists of five buildings, including three which are original huts that were built in 1942 for the displaced citizens. Inside two of the huts you will see the furnishings and stoves that were actually used by the occupants. The large central hall displays pictures, texts and equipment including tents, desks, boxes and other luggage used in their journey to the various campsites from the coast. Although 60 years have passed, there are a few citizens still living in New Denver who originally resettled here in 1942. The surrounding Japanese garden was designed by Mr. Roy Sumi, who created many Japanese gardens in Canada and once supervised the Nitobe Gardens at U.B.C. This facility is now maintained as a site to “emphasize the fragile nature of democracy and the importance of civil rights for all Canadians.”

 The centre is open from mid-May until September from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and is located at 306 Josephine St. in New Denver. Entry Fee: $6 adults, $4 senior and students, $12 family, (age 5 and under free) For information call: 250-358-7288.

Halcyon Hot Springs

	Bounce over boulders, blast through puddles or simply sit back and enjoy Nakusp’s majestic landscape with Halcyon Hot Springs guided All Terrain Vehicle tours.

	The tours, offered from early April to mid-October with three different expeditions varying in length and difficulty, from one hour beginner rides to three hour adventures that will challenge even the most expert of riders, guarantee a wide smile at the finish.

 Lillan Burmeister, who was raised in the Nakusp area and has been riding these machines since she was four years old, is the resort’s principal guide.

	She claims she can convert even the most timid beginners into experts and turn the most hardy experts into dust.

	Depending on your level of experience riders can expect their trip to lead them through a variety of challenging terrain that include speedy straight-aways, technical corners and exciting obstacles.

	Finish off the day with a relaxing soak in the resorts steamy hot springs, or for the real adventurer, saddle up for an equally enjoyable horseback tour. For more information: www.halcyon-hotsprings.com or call 1-888-689-4699.

Rocky Tour Adventures

	Lush cedar forests, alpine meadows, jagged mountaintops, snowy basins, roaring waterfalls and hidden ghost towns are just a few of the places you will experience with Rocky Tour Adventures.

	Based out of New Denver’s Valhalla Inn and the Windsor Hotel in Trout Lake, these all-terrain vehicle tours truly are the most exciting way to experience British Columbia’s mountainous backcountry.

	Through tour guide Albrecht Jost, who moved to the area seven years ago and has now become one of the local history/geography buffs, riders will be safe, relaxed and informed.

	The trips, which Albrecht and his wife Joan title a “soft adventure,” are geared towards novice and family ATVers who seek spectacular mountain scenery rather than mud bogging adventures.

	Rocky Tour Adventures offers fully automatic machines and two seater ATV’s that can accommodate families, or couples that would rather share the driving.

	With over ten different half and full day rides, which through a package deal can also include accommodation and meals, these trips will surely fill more than one photo album.

	Trips must include the use of at least two machines. For more information call (250)-358-2228 or visit www.rockytour.com.;
