The beauty of Hawaii is mesmerizing from Oahu to the Big Island. Each island is unique in its delivery of holiday expectations, stimulating our senses with visual wonders like Diamond Head outside of Waikiki, to the delicate floralscents of pikake and gardenia, and inspired Asian influenced gastronomy. The melodic rhythms of the ukulele bring many to their feet, but mostly, it’s the Aloha spirit which grabs at our heart strings. The Islands’ true essence is in the generosity and kindness of the Hawaiian people, which when combined with all of the above, simply captivates our souls. And here’s an interesting fact…it seems the Hawaiians have a fascination with our part of the world too. Back in the 19th century, scores of Hawaiians left their tropical paradise of swaying coconut palms and warm ocean breezes for the shores of coastal British Columbia. Check out the book written by Tom Koppel entitled “Kanaka – The Untold Story of Hawaiian Pioneers in British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest”. If you love Hawaii, you’ll find it’s a fascinating read of the mutual respect and long standing fondness between our two cultures.

    Kid, Teen and Family Friendly!

Hawaiians love family! So much so that The Hawaii Visitors Bureau has a section on their web site devoted entirely to

‘Family Fun’. Simply click on www.gohawaii.com, then ‘Family Fun’ and enjoy the absolutely gorgeous photos of kids and families exploring the Islands. Oahu is ideal for a family getaway, especially if you’ve got active teens. Surf lessons first, then practicing for at least three to four days guarantees pure bragging rights for those 13 years and older. Then, working on tan lines while lounging by the pool or beach, to swimming and snorkeling amongst gentle sea turtles creates sensational memories for the younger crowd – guaranteed mom and dad will enjoy it too. There are many fabulous hotels to stay at in Oahu. If you’re looking for upscale properties located on the vibrant, re-developed beachfront strip of Waikiki, complete with ocean views, impeccable service, delicious AND healthy meals, as well as guest rooms dressed in tasteful, Hawaiian décor; then have a look at the beautifully renovated Outrigger Waikiki and Outrigger Reef Hotels. I recommend a one bedroom suite with a queen bedded standard room on the same floor (connecting or nearby depending on the age of your children), to accommodate a family of five. Everyone hangs out in the main living area of the suite, has their own bed to sleep and with the extra bathroom, there’s no line up. The pool area is perfect for relaxing- in the sun or the shade, with a beach front that is safe, warm and ‘oh so perfect’ for moonlit

The hotels each offer lots of complimentary on-site activities throughout the day including lei-making in the morning, a cultural walking tour mid-afternoon, to hula lessons on the beach at dusk…and if you need to de-stress from all this fun, be sure to check out the Serenity Spa Outrigger Reef for a soothing couples’ massage – Hawaiian style as in Lomi Lomi. Heading off property, reserve picnic lunches to enjoy with your brood while exploring parks and beaches around Honolulu. All the details can be easily arranged with the concierge at either hotel. Retail therapy follows tanning rituals, so head out the front door where Chanel meets Macy’s, as do many independent retailers unique to Hawaii. This particular strip of Waikiki is actually quite amazing now that the redevelopment is complete. There is a store and a price point for everyone and that goes for restaurants too. Make sure you enjoy a

An incredible ocean sportsman, Duke was a Summer Olympic Medalist in swimming and water polo, and an international inspiration on the sport of surfing. Spectacular pictures taken of his talents and achievements adorn the restaurant. More on this inspirational individual at www.dukekahanamoku.com. Rates and packages available at www.outrigger.com and more hotel options are listed at the Hawaiian Visitors Bureau site at www.gohawaii.com. Be warned, it’s a good thing to book one of those dinner cruises too – the food is palatable, with the entertainment and views reaching back across the water to Honolulu more than making up for any gastronomic shortfalls… and, the kids will love it! Many more packages and air only specials at www.aircanadavacations.com and www.westjetvacations.com.

This is what we live for on the west coast of Canada – the arrival of snow on our spectacular mountains! From the Kootenay Rockies – Fernie and Panorama, to the backyard of Vancouver at Cypress, Grouse and Seymour Mountains. It’s all here for the novice to extreme skiers and boarders. Passionate snow seekers dream of the white stuff falling as soon as summer ends… praying to the snow Gods for snow from November till late spring. And fall it has, so much so that most of the province’s ski resorts opened this past weekend.

One of the province’s all time favourites is Sun Peaks Resort located 45 minutes outside of Kamloops. It’s a family-friendly setting boasting accommodations, dining and outstanding skiing and outdoor adventure tailored for kids of all ages.

Bet You Didn’t Know

Family Ski at Sun Peaks Resort - Courtesy Adam Stein

Boasting 3,678 acres on three mountains including Tod, Sundance and Mt. Morrisey, Sun Peaks Resort offers 117 runs with every chairlift providing access to blue, green and black diamond runs. Uplift with your family and friends, then split up and choose a trail that suits your ability level. Most trails lead right to the village, so it’s super easy to hook up with everyone throughout the day.

The Resort delivers some neat features including “The Kids Ranch” - an animated theme park with dedicated terrain for kids 3-12 years old. For your teenagers there’s great skiing, snow boarding, and the coolest hit …snow-biking.

If you don’t have all the gear for your winter getaway, don’t worry. Guest Services Staff are super supportive and knowledgeable ensuring you are on the slopes in what seems to be

Nancy Greene Raine - Courtesy Sun Peaks Resort/Paul Morrison

simply a matter of minutes. And yes, the ever hospitable Nancy Greene, BC’s own Olympic Gold Medalist calls Sun Peaks Resort home. She skis with resort guests twice daily depending on her travel schedule, so be sure to ask if she’s in town during your visit.

Stay at the ‘mountain chic’ Delta Sun Peaks and experience their special brand of hospitality. From check-in to the ever popular kid-friendly menus (grilled cheese and hot dogs with hot chocolate!), and après-ski spa treatments for mom and dad, this is a resort hotel the entire family will enjoy. Check out more accommodation listings on the Sun Peaks web site. There are numerous condos and chalets that welcome families with kids of all ages.
A mid-mountain village themed after a 19th Century silver mine, complete with rainbow-hued architecture and colourful characters too; Silver Star Ski Resort is all charm and incredible snow.

Like all great ski resorts, Silver Star Mountain Resort has a truly charming personality all its own. Yes, in part due to its famous dry powder snow that falls on some of the best ski runs in the province, it’s also because the people who live and work here absolutely adore their piece of ‘skier’s Heaven’ and it shows! See for yourself at Silver Star Ski Resort Delivers Snow and More

A Fun Family Walk Through Silver Star Resort

With a mid-mountain village themed after a 19th century silver mine, complete with brightly-painted Victorian-styled architecture and boarded sidewalks, the resort overflows with warmth and hospitality. Frank Berkers of Bugaboos Bakery Café (his cinnamon buns are famous the world over), explains why he and his wife Caroline have called Silver Star home for more than thirteen years. “Shortly after we arrived on a ski trip from The Netherlands, we looked at each other and said – we’ve got to stay!” He continued that the main reason why is because “It’s the intimacy of the village. Everyone helps each other and works together to keep our guests happy!’

Best Cinnamon Buns in the West!

This is a magical getaway even if you’re not a passionate snow-seeker! Unable to ski on my last visit, I still thoroughly enjoyed my time amidst the peaceful setting of the resort. One afternoon found me chatting with a mid -aged gal from Toronto over a relaxing cup of tea. Sitting together in the Bulldog Hotel, she shared that while her husband and friends were out skiing at a leisurely pace, she just wanted to unwind and enjoy the village ambiance. We smiled at the sight of young children laughing and playing out the front of the hotel, while we basked in the simple pleasure of just watching the snow fall. No pressure, no stress – just gorgeous scenery and pleasing company.

Yes, it’s true – the skiing and boarding are outstanding at this Okanagan resort. And whether you are new to these mountain sports, or aspiring to improve your skills, Silver Star Snowsport School is regarded as the crème de la crème within Canada. Under the direction of Canada’s leading teacher of teachers, Norman Kruetz, he and his respected team provide a learning experience unlike any other.

After an outstanding day laying tracks, take time for a soothing massage with the team at Ousia Day Spa. This talented group will pamper your fingers and toes, and spoil your scalp with fabulous esthetics and hair services too. Be sure to make a reservation in advance of your arrival to ensure a blissful experience.

Dining throughout the village is on par with any upscale city neighbourhood – reserve your table at the Silver Grill Steak and Chophouse or, if you’re fortunate to be at the Resort on a Thursday through Sunday, book a romantic trip to the rustic setting of Paradise Camp atop Silver Star’s Putnam Creek. After boarding a cozy 12 passenger cab attached to a grooming machine, diners take off for an adult-oriented, sumptuous a la carte meal to enjoy the view from the top .

Kid Friendly!

Without question there’s literally a mountain of fun for families staying at Silver Star. Kids are definitely their specialty – especially if you’ve got young ones, from newborn to about twelve. Yes, I did say newborns!

Star Kids Centre is the hub of action for junior guests. With a day care program that is licensed for babies (six weeks), right up to six year olds, it’s fantastic that mom and dad can enjoy a day on the hill confident that their young family members are in the best of care.

The setting is well thought out. It’s safe, bright and secure with confident, caring staff capable of keeping your little ones pampered and entertained for a few hours each day. Ski lessons for three to twelve year olds are held in an enclosed beginner area and while you can see the smiles and hear the laughter, the kids are protected.

If your kids aren’t into the slopes one day, there’s still a ton of great stuff to do before little heads hit the pillow! It’s quite a sight to watch kids on mini snowmobiles or twirling around on the natural outdoor skating pond at Silver Lake. And, how ‘bout a spontaneous game of hockey? Your budding Olympians will be grinning from ear to ear!

Championship Boarder in Training at Silver Star

For evening entertainment, there’s a family activity every night of the week. Before your trip, view Silver Star’s weekly activity calendar on their web site and plan which events you want to attend. The evening’s cocoa is incredibly yummy; it’s complimentary and is the perfect finish to a special day on the slopes. Visit www.skisilverstar.com for details.

Silver Star Sleigh Rides - family fun to 'snow romantic'!

TRAVEL Bites

Both Silver Star Mountain Resort and sister property, Big White Ski Resort have great packages put together for families as well as those wishing to escape the lower mainland during the Olympics. Check out the web sites by going online at www.bigwhite.com and www.skisilverstar.com. The visuals are stunning and meant to motivate – sit back and enjoy, then book your trip!

Planning a family ski getaway over a long weekend or during a holiday season this year? Consider visiting one of British Columbia’s most loved ski destinations – Big White Ski Resort located a quick hour outside of Kelowna. See video.

Set amongst spectacular beauty of over 750 cm (that’s 24’ plus) of fluffy, sparkling champagne powder, this magnificent resort affords the most expansive and spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. Plus the entire destination is ski and board in/out, as well as completely accessible on foot. Stroll the village in the evenings along lighted walking paths which connect the main village to the Skier Bridge, all the way down to Happy Village.

Big White Big Views!

Start the day at Village Centre Mall to pick up lift tickets, rentals and the day’s schedule over delicious snacks and fresh lattes at Beano’s Coffee Bar. Then head out to ski and board on any one of the 118 designated trails for beginners to those seeking extreme conditions – no matter what your family’s level of ability, it’s non-stop fun up, down and across the undulating terrain that is Big White. Snow ghosts, a phenomenon created by winds, clouds and fog that frequently pass across the ridge tops and summit of the mountain, add a mystical touch to the experience.

Big White’s Kids’ Centre houses rentals, lessons and child-minding, with snacks and lunches under one roof. The bright, colourful facility provides daycare from 18 months to six years, with an engaging Kids Club, complete with supervised climbing wall, for children aged three to twelve years. Managed by an enthusiastic team of professionals, this safe, controlled environment is constitently voted #1 in Canada. The most frequent comment heard from the kids other than ‘when’s lunch?” is “when do get to go to the park?”…that would be Telus Park, the favourite location for keen boarders and budding Olympic champions!

Overnight accommodations include everything from full service hotels and luxury condominiums – most with their own private decks and hot tubs, to cozy cabins and modest-priced units. And with uniquely ‘Big White’ dining spots like

Heart-warming Gun Barrel Coffees

The Globe (an on mountain wine/tapas bar), to the casually elegant Kettle Valley Steakhouse and Wine bar for dinner or, Snowshoe Sam’s for a famous ‘gun barrel coffee’ après ski, eat in or out…the choice is up to you.

Good Riding, Good Friends

Ok, so you don’t continually get awarded the North American Family Resort of the Year if you don’t meet or exceed expectations! Yes! Absolutely – Big White is incredibly kid friendly. Not just for the under 12 crowd, it’s also a major hit if you’ve got teenagers.

Apart from the exceptional skiing and boarding, Big White has gained an enviable reputation for keeping the gang entertained with all sorts of cool activities. Step on board the gondola to drop 1800’ below the Village Centre to Happy Valley. As its name states, this wide open space includes a huge outdoor skating rink – perfect for a game of hockey at one end while couples and families skate hand in hand at the other. A crackling outdoor fire pit and steaming hot chocolate are close by.

After a few spins, head over to the Mega Snow Coaster tube park. The squeals of laughter coming from the series of nine groomed lanes can be heard clear across the mountain! After sailing down, a rope tow hitches to the tubes for a gentle ride back up…and depending on which night of the week it is, indoor entertainment in the Happy Valley Lodge might include movies and snacks, to Big White’s version of Canadian Idol.

Travel Bits…

Easy to get to from the lower mainland and really anywhere from around BC, and most of North America for that matter, Big White is about an hour’s drive from Kelowna’s airport in the gorgeous Okanagan region, or about a four and half hour drive from Vancouver. Their web site is fabulous and easy to follow. Links with Air Canada and Westjet boast that you could be out on the slopes the same day you travel if you’ve got relatives or friends coming in from other provinces. Regular guests, Dave and Wilma from Toronto, echoed this statement with big smiles as we shared a shuttle from the airport to the Resort. Check it out for yourself at www.bigwhite.com.
