Every spring and fall Merritt residents and visitors get a memorable taste of the exotic.

In spring, they are welcomed by the Punjabi Canadian Roots Club and treated to a delicious East Indian dinner at the Basakhi Mela (harvest) celebration; the fall feast takes place in September and is hosted by the Merritt Rotary Club and Sunrise Rotary. These are wonderful evenings filled with great food, friendships, entertainment and colourful costumes.

Both events are fundraisers for the clubs and always sell out. The dates vary so keep your eye open for further details.;

Paintball is a fun social activity enjoyed by people of all ages. Godey Corrals Paintball located southeast of Merritt on Joeyaska Road offers the paintball experience in an old corral setting. The field used has several old corrals, a fort, an old barn and a vintage house. Don Collins invites you to book your group party for any occasion. Children and youth welcome – ages 8 and up. Winter Carnival

Merritt’s first annual Winter Carnival,

hosted by the Downtown Business Committee Feb. 14, 2009, was such a success that it will be an annual event.

Come, enjoy the games, competitions, food, fun and laughter.

Get a team together and challenge the winners of the bed race, tug-of-war, lawn mower race or swooshing. Or run against the kids in the egg and spoon race- they often do better than the adults! The competitions vary, depending on the weather. The little ones will enjoy the kid’s tent, games, crafts, clowns, entertainers and stories just for them.

Fill up from the healthy snacks table, check out the baked potato drive or nibble on bannock.

Keep an eye out for the dates of the 2010 Winter Carnival. It is an event for all ages.;

Logan Lake Little Britches Rodeo

Little Britches Rodeo is an annual event usually held in June 28, 2009. Contestants up the age of 14 compete and then continue on to the next town. Some events include goat tying, stake races, barrel racing, pole bending, steer dobbing, calf tying, breakaway roping, dummy roping, and steer riding! Logan Lake Ranch and Country Club is proud to host the Little Britches Rodeo.;

The Capital Soundstage at Iron Mountain Music is Merritt’s venue for up-and-comers and those who’ve already arrived. Drop-in for teen fun

Merritt has a teen drop-in centre for the younger members of the family. The Merritt and District Youth Resources Teen Centre on Coldwater Avenue has a pair of pool tables, video games as well as special programs available through the year.

The Teen Centre is open Monday to Friday from 3-9 p.m. It’s staffed by adults who can provide outreach services. For more information on the centre as well as a list of activities, call the Teen Centre at (250) 315-0248.

Ride your sled

With a wide variety of terrain types, plenty of alpine altitude and great trails, the Nicola Valley offers the best snowmobiling for riders of all skill types. A great

location for beginners is at the Helmer Lake Recreation Site, about 15 minutes north of Merritt on Highway 5 (Coquihalla). With trails ranging all around Swakum Mountain, Helmer Lake is also one of the site’s of the Merritt Snowmobile Club’s annual Snowarama event. More experienced snowmobilers can head south to the Thynne Mountain Snowmobile Trails, located about 30 minutes south of Merritt just off Highway 5 near the community of Brookmere. The more extreme rides are located 18 kilometres west of Merritt at Stoyoma or Honeymoon -location of the annual Spring Fling. Merritt’s Senior Centre at 2202 Jackson Avenue is a beehive of activity. Even in July and August rumoli, pool, cribbage, whist and bingo are ongoing events and visitors are always welcome.
