What You
Need To Know…

Visitor Information: While touring Vancouver Island, watch for Visitor Centres where trained staff can assist with your travel questions and provide information on accommodation, services, attractions, activities and community events. In this publication, phone numbers and addresses for most Visitor Centres are listed with each community’s information. For general information on touring in British Columbia as well as accommodation reservations, call 1-800-HELLO-BC.

Telephones: The area code on Vancouver Island and for all phone numbers in this publication is (250) unless otherwise indicated. For local directory assistance, call 411. For long distance directory assistance, call 1-(area code)-555-1212.
In case of emergency, call 911.

Taxes: The GST is a value-added tax of 5% applicable to most purchases regardless of whether the buyer is a Canadian resident or a visitor. In B.C., an additional provincial tax of 7% is also applied to all retail purchases, except liquor, which is taxed at 10%. Accommodation is taxed from 15% to 17% including the GST.

Driving the Island:

- Speed limits on Vancouver Island are posted in kilometres per hour.

- For a distance chart of Island communities, see the map in the centre of this publication.

- Vehicle seat belts and motorcycle and bicycle helmets are compulsory at all times.

- Approximate Driving Speed Conversions

30km/hr = 20mph 40km/hr = 25mph

50km/hr = 30mph 60km/hr = 40mph

80km/hr = 50mph 100km/hr = 60mph

The Island by Ferry

Much more than a simple mode of transportation, BC Ferries offers a spectacularly scenic experience that is as much a part of your Vancouver Island adventure as the breathtaking views, charming communities and innumerable activities and attractions.

Since beginning its ferry service to Vancouver Island in 1960, BC Ferries has grown into one of the largest ferry systems in the world, boasting a fleet of 36 vessels serving up to 47 ports of call on 25 routes throughout coastal British Columbia. Vessels carry both vehicles and passengers, with the largest ships, the Spirit of British Columbia and the Spirit of Vancouver Island, measuring 560-feet in length – two football fields back to back! The larger ferries serve on major routes between mainland British Columbia and Vancouver Island and feature a variety of food services, gift shops, ship-to-shore telephones, laptop hook-ups, comfortable seating lounges and outdoor seating areas, video games, preschool play areas and elevators.

Joining the fleet this season are three new ferries taking passengers to the next level of comfort and service. The new Coastal ships, Renaissance, Inspiration and Celebration, will be introduced between spring and fall to the three major Island/Mainland routes.

While most Vancouver Island visitors arrive with BC Ferries, no matter how you get here, you’ll want to take the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of British Columbia’s coastal waterways. Possibilities range from day trips to beautiful destinations such as the northern and southern Gulf Islands to popular northern cruises that include the awe-inspiring Inside Passage (Port Hardy to Prince Rupert), the Queen Charlotte Islands and the Discovery Coast Passage – each providing access to the stunningly scenic northern British Columbia!

Please note: Reservations are available for a fee on major route sailings between Vancouver (Tsawwassen or Horseshoe Bay) and Vancouver Island (Swartz Bay, Duke Point or Departure Bay) and between Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast (Horseshoe Bay to Langdale). Reservations are strongly suggested for sailings from Vancouver (Tsawwassen) to southern Gulf Islands destinations; no fee is charged for this reservation.

For BC Ferries information, including schedules, fares, reservations and trip-planning tools, visit www.bcferries.com or call 1-888-BCFERRY (1-888-223-3779) toll-free throughout North America, or 386-3431 in Victoria. From your cell phone, call *BCF (*223) on Rogers or Telus Mobility networks.

Coastal Explorations

Stop in McLoughlin Bay and experience a cultural historic tour of six village sites in nearby Bella Bella or take a tour of the waterways aboard an authentic First Nations canoe.

Prince Rupert to
Port Hardy – Inside Passage: Enjoy a leisurely summer day cruise through the world-renowned Inside Passage, travelling through calm inlets, tree-covered islands and majestic Coastal mountains, all with the privacy of your own day or overnight cabin.

BC Ferries visits some of the most beautiful spots on Vancouver Island and the neighbouring smaller islands.

Here are a few sidetrip suggestions:

Mill Bay Crossing:

Skip the drive and take the scenic water route from Brentwood Bay on the Saanich Peninsula to Mill Bay in the Cowichan Valley.

Swartz Bay to Mayne,

Pender, Saturna and Galiano Islands:

Renowned for their beauty, serenity and laid-back lifestyle, experience these islands individually or on a self-directed circle tour.

Swartz Bay (Sidney) to Saltspring Island: Browse the galleries and markets of this island paradise. Return as you came or make it a circle trip by leaving Saltspring via ferry from Vesuvius on the west side of the island and crossing to Crofton.

Nanaimo to Gabriola Island: An easy spot to while away the day – don’t miss the awe-inspiring Malaspina Galleries, a series of caves and caverns carved into the sandstone by the surf.

Buckley Bay (Courtenay) to Denman and Hornby Islands: Beachcombing, kayaking, diving and artisan studios are just four of many good reasons to visit these islands.

Campbell River to Quadra Island: A 10-minute ride takes you to this fine spot to fish, hike, kayak and more. Carry on to Cortes Island, a tiny island with a lovely landscape of orchards, lagoons and beaches.

Port McNeill to Sointula: Visit this historic community a short 25-minute ferry ride from Port McNeill.

Port McNeill to Alert Bay: Renowned for its First Nations culture, Alert Bay on Cormorant Island boasts the impressive U’mista Cultural Centre, First Nations-guided walking and adventure tours and much more.

(Editor’s Note: With many of the ferries to the smaller islands, your ticket includes your return fare.)

For details call 1-888-BCFERRY (1-888-223-3779).  From your cell phone,  *BCF (*223) on Rogers or Telus Mobility networks or visit www.bcferries.com;

Whether you have an hour to spend on the way to a ferry, or the whole day, Sidney and the Saanich Peninsula are among the Island’s most charming destinations.

The transport hub of south Vancouver Island, the region is home to the international airport and ferries sailing to the B.C. Mainland, the Gulf Islands (including Saltspring Island), Sidney Marine Park and Anacortes, WA.

Much of Sidney’s activity is found along the main streets of Beacon and Bevan and the waterfront. The best way to enjoy your visit is to park the car and take a leisurely stroll. Everything is conveniently close, and you’ll find a surprising diversity, including more than 100 independent stores. You’ll also notice an abundance of bookstores, not by accident, but as a conscious effort to create Canada’s only BookTown. Indeed, Sidney boasts more bookstores per capita than anywhere else in the country!

The attractive main street is also home to numerous coffee shops, bakeries and chocolate stores. Some visitors never make it any further! But if you’re a collector, the town is also packed with art galleries, gift shops and antique stores. On Thursday evenings during summer, Beacon turns into a pedestrian mall with stalls selling everything from wild salmon and fresh produce to clothing and crafts.

A wonderful sea walk follows the shoreline for several kilometers, passing the old federal wharf and the fishing pier. Soak in the wonderful views across Georgia Strait – on a clear day glimpse the snow-capped summits of Mt. Baker to the east and Mt. Olympus to the south – and enjoy not-to-be-missed waterfront attractions such as Scratch Patch at Mineral World. Hunt for gemstones, pan for gold and more. In Port Sidney, the Marine Ecology Centre explores the world of undersea life with aquaria, touch-tanks, microscopes and friendly staff to advise and instruct.

If all that natural science has sharpened your interest, sign up for a trip with SeaQuest Whale Watching or Emerald Sea Adventures. In addition to the summer-visiting orcas, highlights included eagles, seals, sea lions and otters.

Enjoy a guided EcoTour Cruise around the bays and headlands or make a memorable trip aboard the passenger-only ferry to Sidney Spit Marine Park where you can spend the day on the finest white sand beaches in Georgia Strait.

The waters around Vancouver Island are also famous for diving. Sign up with a local dive shop and experience the spectacularly clear waters of the Saanich Inlet, or explore the 110-metre-long destroyer HMCS Mackenzie and the coastal freighter GB Church submerged just off-shore.

A little outside of Sidney, on the Saanich Peninsula, excellent attractions include the world-famous Butchart Gardens and beautiful Butterfly Gardens. Family fun awaits at Heritage Acres and at the Centre of the Universe, where you can visit the stars. For flying fans, stop by the B.C. Air Museum, located on the airport lands.

Birding is a popular pastime (the bays and wetlands are crowded in the spring and fall); try a round of golf at Glen Meadows or Ardmore, where visitors are most welcome, or visit one of the local vineyards to sample the new and burgeoning vintages of Vancouver Island.

The Peninsula is also famous for its thriving arts community – visit artisans’ studios and see the art as it’s made, a memorable experience – or enjoy the performing arts at Sidney’s Mary Winspear Centre.

Come for an afternoon, but be careful,

you may never leave.

The day-long Brentwood Bay Festival of fun kicks off with the Central Saanich Lion’s mouth-watering Pancake Breakfast. Steaming plates of fluffy pancakes and juicy sausages are available starting at 8 a.m. beside the Old West Saanich Schoolhouse in Pioneer Park. The colourful, music-filled parade begins at Bayside middle school on Wallace Drive, and continues along West Saanich Road to Stelly’s X Road. Park your lawn chair on the sidewalk or pull up a piece of curb – every seat’s got a great view.

Along with the traditional parade there will be plenty of clowns, kids’ activities, local artists and vendors, two stages of music, and more! A delicious First Nations Salmon Barbecue is offered at noon.

The fun continues all day with miniature golf, comedians, dancers and magicians.

Be sure to stroll through Art in the Park, and take in all the amazing wares in the market area at Pioneer Park.

The 2008 Brentwood Bay Festival will be held on June 7 in Pioneer Park (at the intersection of West Saanich and Clarke Road) in Brentwood Bay.

Take in the annual Yellow Wolf Powwow on Tsartlip land, off Stelly’s X Road, on the August long weekend. First Nation dancers, drummers and singers of all ages will amaze you with their talent.

Brentwood Bay’s Annual Strawberry Dance is held each June in the Brentwood Community Hall.

Picture a soft yellow sunset on a wooded inlet – that’s Brentwood Bay. Southwest of Sidney, off West Saanich Road, is nestled the seaside village of Brentwood Bay. The village is on the protected and secluded waters of the Saanich Inlet, making it an ideal anchorage for all types of vessels and a wonderful place to reside. Along the waterfront is a fascinating path that allows visitors the opportunity to experience the charm of the quaint village.

You can begin at either end, but there is more parking at the south end of the path. To get there, turn west off West Saanich Road to Wallace Drive and follow the road around a series of turns until you reach Moody Crescent. From there, follow the Beach Access signs to the base of Delamere Road.

The path winds north in front of an exclusive condominium complex where you can almost reach out over the water to touch the many moored boats. Continuing along the path, you will reach Angler’s Anchorage

Marina, a friendly ‘fisherman’s hangout’. The Saanich Inlet is famous for the size of salmon caught by the local sport fishermen and the marina was once well known for the small boats called the ‘Brentwood Specials’ they rented out.

The path ends at the Blue’s Bayou Cafe at the bottom of Marchant Road.

Just because your walk is over, does not mean that your exploration of the village is done. The village itself offers a variety of stops, including art galleries, restaurants, coffee shops, bakeries, gift shops and book stores. At the bottom of Verdier Avenue you’ll find an eclectic group of businesses, from Moodyville shops to the Brentwood Bay Lodge, where you can rent kayaks, go scuba diving, take an eco-tour, spend some time in the pub or treat yourself to a gourmet dinner. ;

The WSANEC, or Coast Salish First Nation, have called the Saanich Peninsula home for thousands of years. The people, who reside from Bella Coola, south to the Oregon coast, are tied by the Sencoten language.

Traditionally, the Coast Salish had permanent winter villages, many located on the Peninsula, and temporary summer campsites. The Pacific Ocean was the main source of food for their people, it provided salmon, other fish and shellfish.

Historically, villages of the Coast Salish were typically constructed of Red Cedar split plank and had earthen floors. Longhouses provided homes for 40 or more people.

Coast Salish art includes the totem pole and a variety of other works including sculptures, masks, baskets and fabric arts. Many animals such as ravens, eagles, frogs and beavers are symbolized through Coast Salish art.

The Saanich Peninsula is a land rich in marine resources and a diversity of plant and animal species. It has long been recognized as a landscape which has been managed and maintained by the First Nations people who have lived in the region for generations.
