The Langley Spirit of BC Community Committee is one of over 95 similar committees around British Columbia that have been created to help spread the excitement of the 2010 Winter Games to all regions of the province. The work of thousands of volunteers in more than 200 communities will ensure that the Vancouver-Whistler games are truly for everyone.
Throughout 2008 our province celebrates its 150th Birthday and the Langley Spirit of BC is working with organizers to add a touch of birthday fun to traditional events in the community. November will be the grand finale to festivities with Douglas Day celebrations in Fort Langley. Several special events will be held at the Fort, including a re-enactment of the reading of the Proclamation that created the crown colony of British Columbia, a non-motorized parade and other events that will be announced closer to the day!
Each year Spirit of BC Week is celebrated in February to draw attention to the dates of the 2010 Winter Games. This year’s activities included flag raising ceremonies at both our municipal halls, special Spirit of BC Storytelling activities at our local libraries, free family skating and other fun events. Plans for 2009 Spirit of BC Week festivities will be even more exciting so stay tuned!
In May, the Langley Spirit of BC moved into a larger office at 101-20611 Fraser Highway. From this office, staff will be working on projects focusing on Volunteerism, Accessibility in addition to monitoring opportunities for local businesses to work with VANOC in the final stages of preparing for 2010.
Langley Spirit of BC will be out an about in the community for May Day, Langley City’s Parade and Community Day Celebration, Aldergrove Fair Days and many more events. Watch for our colourful banners and flags at events in your neighbourhood.
The Spirit of BC is alive and growing in Langley – be sure you FEEL IT – LIVE IT – SHARE IT – it’s contagious!
