Celebrate New Year’s in Vancouver

I am so taken by the excitement surrounding the upcoming Olympics this Christmas season. It seems one of the most popular items for gift giving was a pair of those cozy red mittens. People are wearing them grocery shopping, walking along the seawalls across the lower mainland and ‘just because’ ! So don your pair and head out to some of Vancouver’s best attractions to celebrate the arrival of 2010.
Capilano Suspension Bridge is Vancouver’s oldest visitor attraction and truly one of its most popular. If you are visiting the city of Vancouver and staying downtown, simply head over the Lions Gate Bridge and straight up Capilano Road to the Bridge. The Canyon Lights display is outstanding and runs through to January 4th, from 5p daily. Full details at www.capbridge.com.
And while you’re on the North Shore, make sure to visit the Lonsdale Quay and lower Lonsdale. From 3rd and Lonsdale, down to the water, this area is fast becoming one of the most popular to browse First Nations galleries and shops, sip something special in any number of the cafes dotting Lonsdale, to shopping at over 90 specialty shops in the public market at the Quay. In the evening, it’s a beautiful view across the water to the City. Pick up a hot drink from the market and watch the seabus sailing back and forth to the foot of Granville Street in Vancouver. This is public transit at its best. A listing of stores and hours of operation for the Market is available at www.lonsdalequay.com. For lots more information on the many things to see and do over on the spectacular North Shore – including skiing, snowshoeing and dining atop Grouse Mountain,
visit the excellent site at www.vancouversnorthshore.com.
Families who love the outdoors will love this special event for New Year’s Eve taking place at the GE Plaza at Robson Square. On December 31st, from 4:30p to 7p there will be free, child friendly entertainment along with an early countdown to the New Year. And if you love to skate, this is the place to visit for Vancouver’s answer to Central Park. Free ice skating is available daily from 12 noon to 9p! For parking and details, visit www.YouGottaBeHere.ca.
